Poggenpohl: Kitchens fit for Bond

By on Oct 13, 2009 • 2 Comments (give us yours!)

Daniel CraigPoggenpohl has long been the standard of luxury for high-end kitchen design. And now they’ve taken that expertise into the dining room. And in a fancy, high tech, James Bondish way. (Okay, now I’m imagining having Daniel Craig over for dinner — but I digress.)

With the punch of a button the Poggenpohl “Dining Desk” slides from a narrow all-purpose table to a dining table that is the perfect solution for a family-style meal. No buffet or dumb waiter needed, the dining desk covers all bases. Rolling carts are fitted with convenient inserts such as drink coolers and hot plates that slide easily into side slots. There is additional room for serverware and cutlery in the center “drawer,” which is exposed when the table is extended.

Powered by a noiseless motor, the Dining Desk is more than a cool gadget, it’s a practical space saver too. (Check out HGTV’s feature video.) When Poggenpohl’s Dallas Showroom Manager Angel Calderon demonstrated it to me I was amazed, remembering all the times I struggle with that awkward leaf I have to add to my dining room table to accommodate additional dinner guests. Mr. Calderon even let me press the “magic” button and work the Dining Desk magic on my own. Sure enough, the two sides glide gracefully back together. (Come on, you know you’d want to press the button too!)

And fancy, Jetsons-esque dining tables aren’t the only cutting edge pieces in Poggenpohl’s new showroom in the Design District. Their “Integration Kitchen” is outfitted with a glass, back-lit LCD backsplash that rotates colors and can be controlled and paused with a remote control. A new kitchen for every mood, or holiday! Can’t you just imagine a dinner for two with romantic, amber mood lighting? Or set the scene for a ghoulishly glam Halloween party with a glowing orange kitchen? My mind explodes with the possibilities!

Oh yeah. And they have cabinets too. Lots of cabinets! Cabinets that would will make your pots, pans and glassware sigh with pleasure. And those, well you’ll just have to see them for yourself.

I guess it would be too much to hope for an Austin Powers version of the LCD lights?

I would like to find a stylish, non-high tech looking coffee table that, with the push of a button, would evolve into a dining table for four.
