This is the first in a series of posts called “Discovering the Design District.” Look forward to more posts with insight on the Design District, including how to get to Lower Oak Lawn, the vision behind the project, and much more!
Since launching LowerOakLawn.com, I’ve spent most of my happy hours, dinners and phone conversations explaining to my friends what exactly I do at my new job. Hands down, the most frequently asked question I get asked is “Where the heck is the Design District?”
Here’s the usual conversation:
Friend: “I’ve noticed you’re on facebook all day. What is that about? Are you unemployed or just really bored at work?”
Me: “Actually, it’s my job to facebook… I write a blog about the Design District!”
Friend: “Where is the Design District?”
Me: (As I pull out my iPhone and load the Maps app) “It’s on ‘Lower Oak Lawn’ – Oak Lawn on the other side of I-35.”
Friend: “Life in Dallas exists west of I-35?”
Me: “Surprising but true.”
Knowing my friends are faithful facebook stalkers, I figured if I posted a map of the Design District they would probably actually look at it, avoiding the need for the “where is it” conversation.
And I know my friends aren’t the only Dallasites who are clueless as to where Lower Oak Lawn is (despite the rather obvious name) so I hope it will be educational to everyone! Check out the maps below to get a bird’s eye view of where the Design District is and where it sits in relation to the rest of Dallas.
Lower Oak Lawn is minutes from Downtown, Uptown, and the Park Cities. It sits just west of I-35 — northwest of Downtown. I pointed out the apartments in LOL, since “Where are those cool looking apartments?” is the next most frequently asked question I get.
The Design District is pretty easy to get around once you look at a map.
So now you know where LOL is. Now how do you get there? That’s up next in the Discovering the Design District series so check back soon!
