Art This Week in the Design District

This week is jam packed with art action in the Design District so I’ve expanded my monthly “Evening of Art” post to include a whole week’s worth of art events. Highlights and listings after the jump.

Wednesday March 24, 2010

The Dallas Contemporary swings into action, kicking off the week of art with a concert on Wednesday evening and wrapping up the week with a day of art for kids and families on Saturday.

New Sounds for a New Space
The Dallas Contemporary
In the raw setting that inspired the music, composer Christina Rusnak unveils the first movement of her original composition 161 Glass Movement I: The Floor for Percussion Ensemble.
Doors open at 6:00 pm, performance begins at 7.

Thursday March 25, 2010

After Hours Teen Art Night
The Dallas Contemporary
6:00-8:00 pm
Teens get their own time to make art and view the current exhibition.

Friday March 26, 2010

Samuel Lynne breaks the mold by hosting their exhibit opening and artist reception on Friday night.

Internationally-acclaimed artist Michael Kalish displays sculptures of iconic personalities, classic Americana and elegant roses created from his signature medium, license plates and vintage tailgates.

Saturday March 27, 2010

The highlight of Saturday night will be the opening of the Holly Johnson Gallery’s five year anniversary exhibition, Back and Forth. The multi-artist exhibition will highlight artists from their first five years and also introduce several new artists.

Another must-see of the evening will be the unveiling of Gabriel Dawe’s installation in the Conduit Gallery Project Room which will feature hundreds of spools of multi-colored fabric thread used to create an interactive cocoon-like structure. Now I can’t wait to see how that turns out!

This free event encourages children of all ages to use their eyes, hands, and imagination to enter the world of contemporary art. Families & friends can enjoy gallery adventures and hands-on art making that draw inspiration from the artspace’s current exhibition, James Gilbert: Warnings & Instructions.
