A Suite of Blue Sea, Sip, Sip, Mixed Media on Canvas, 72”x60”Tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, multi-talented artist Gary Komarin will be at Gremillion & Co. Fine Art in the Dallas Design District for an artist reception honoring the opening of his newest exhibit, “The Lake Project.” The exhibition includes works on paper and canvas.
I got a chance to sit down for a short Q&A with the artist and get some insight into his inspiration and painting process.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
GK: My entire life, to be honest, has been my inspiration. I am quite sure that I was very visual from birth and was taking in great amounts of visual information before I could speak or write. Taking in information also includes things tactile and textural, and sounds as well. It all relates. Paintings operate on many levels and, while essentially visual, they encourage other modalities. The way something feels, how one imagines certain objects touching, the sounds things make when they rub and scrape and flow.
How do you know when a piece of work is complete?
GK: One never knows with absolute certainty. It is an intuitive gut feeling. One learns to leave the painting alone, to not overwork, to walk out of the room.
Do you visualize your work before you create it?
GK: There are times when I see a form or the need for a certain color or mark seconds before the brush hits the canvas, but not always. Sometimes my eye follows my hand which seems to move with a life of its own.
Do you have a mentor?
GK: There are many artists that I admire and they’re not necessarily always painters. Some include writers, musicians, architects, filmakers, and philsophers, too.
