This Thursday, May 17, the The Kerr Collection will host an open house debuting fifteen plus new works from Dallas artist Scott Kerr.

Scott is the brother of Sean Kerr, President of The Kerr Collection, a family owned showroom in the Dallas Design District. Scott is the showroom’s exclusive artist. He paints with a Venetian plaster method on solid plywood since regular canvas can’t hold up to his techniques. The photo to the right features one of Scott’s soft abstract works.

“We’re very excited to have so many brilliant new pieces to display in the showroom,” says Gina Campbell, Showroom Manager at The Kerr Collection. “Scott’s work is truly inspired.”

In addition to producing works for The Kerr Collection, Scott does many commissioned pieces. interior designer Anne Williams commissioned a painting from the artist for Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett and his wife, Brill (pictured above).

Designers and the public are invited to enjoy light bites and cool drinks from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. while previewing the new art.

Mark your calendar for Thursday, April 26 when Alta Design District apartments, in partnership with The Art Menu, will host an art party showcasing works from several talented local artists. Guests are invited to Alta Design District’s Sky Deck where they will enjoy spectacular views of downtown Dallas, plus wine, cocktails and hors d’ouveres from The Meddlesome Moth.

Carmen Menza, The Art Menu's April "Artist of the Month" will be in attendance at Thursday's event.

The sky deck and select apartments will be adorned with works from artists represented by The Art Menu. The Art Menu is an online print gallery that offers limited-edition, reproduction works of art on canvas from an elite group of Dallas-area artists.

Launched in October 2011, the site was founded by David Hobbs, a Dallas-based investment advisor who has always had an interest in art. Hobbs’ sister, a professional artist whose work is featured on the site, initially sparked his interest in the business of the art industry. ”It’s often difficult for artists coming out of art school to promote themselves in an effective way,” says Hobbs, who learned firsthand from helping his sister.

When the economy slowed, another artist friend reached out to Hobbs for business advice. Hobbs and the artist decided to make prints of his work, offering the artwork at a lower price point than the originals, and giving him something to sell in a down economy. After getting the process launched, Hobbs realized that he could do the same thing for more artists, and the idea for The Art Menu was born.

“What differentiates The Art Menu from other online print sites is that we put the artist at the forefront. Our focus is really trying to market the artist themselves, not just the artwork,” says Hobbs.

Caravan 2 by Carmen Menza

Each artist featured on the site is hand selected by The Art Menu’s advisory board. ”All of our artists are high quality, professional artists. Not all of them make their living selling their art, but most would if they could.”

Consumers benefit from The Art Menu because they can get high quality prints at a fraction of the cost of purchasing an original. Additionally, The Art Menu limits the number of prints of each piece to 50 and provides certificates of authenticity.

The Art Menu has a local focus and only represents artists from Dallas. Though it was conceptualized to appeal to local consumers, the advisory board has discovered a much broader reach and have sold prints to buyers across the world — from Oklahoma City to Australia.

The Art Menu will be featuring around 15 prints at the art party and two to three originals from their artist of the month, Carmen Menza. Several other Art Menu artists will be in attendance as well.

The party kicks off at 4:30 p.m. and will last until 7:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public, but guests are asked to please RSVP to info@theartmenu.com.

This week art takes center stage in Lower Oak Lawn as two exciting exhibits make their Design District debuts. From mixed media to multi-media, you’re sure to enjoy the colorful creativity presented in these two shows.

Fine Art. A reflection of his intuitive response to the natural world, his new works strike a balance of determined structural organization and free improvisation of form and color.

The artist, whose works have been described as lyrical and poetic, continues his ongoing interest in color nuance, paint manipulation, linear gesture, and experimental process.

“For the past several years I have been working on a series of paintings and mixed media collages that respond to the variety and complexity of nature: intricate surface patterns, erosion, random stains, etc. These paintings are symbolic rather than literal. The collages are intimate in scale, creating a dialogue between found materials and a combination of paint processes. I attempt to create images that are both mysterious and timeless.”

Jerrold Burchman’s exhibit will be on display through April 26, 2012

Original works of art consistent with the theme will also be featured in in LuminArte’s Levee and River Edge galleries. Featured artists include Phil Stein of Bethlehem, PA, Shelly Shanks and Sergio Santos of Houston and Jamie Labar and Jim Lively of Dallas.

Russell Young was always fascinated by America. He admittedly observes that it is far more common for Americans to wind up Anglophiles than vice versa, but Russell Young isn’t normal.

After a career photographing celebrities throughout England, Young turned his focus towards creating a different form of art that he kept to himself until his first exhibition in 2003.

Marilyn Crying Dyptic, 2011 Image Courtesy of Russell Young

Now, less than ten years later, Young has made a name for himself throughout the world as a young British artist working in a unique vein, melding screen printing, photography and the assertion of himself as artist into his occasional photographic appropriations.

At the retrospective of sorts the Goss-Michael Foundation currently has on display throughout their gallery, Young’s critique of celebrity, which has characterized much of the work he created in his post-celebrity photographer phase, is glaringly evident.

The exhibit contains examples from several of his earliest series of paintings which include “Marilyn Crying Dyptic” from his Dirty Pretty Things series, images of Muhammad Ali and Jackie Kennedy from his American Envy series and “mug shots” of Elvis Presley and Sid Vicious.

Perhaps the easiest way to attempt to define Young’s work, especially these early screen shots usually manipulated in some way; (his use of diamond dust is signature and in the case of the Vicious and Presley shots, the use of off-beat coloring), is as a reaction to his career “making celebrities look good.”

Vicious, having just been brought in on the charge of murdering his wife looks like a killer, and Monroe, crying, is clearly immune to the country’s infatuation with her celebrity. Kurt Cobain is another image Young used in the Dirty Pretty Things series, a series perhaps intending to indicate the danger of our celebrity obsession.

Despite the “warnings” that seem to be implicit in these depictions of ours, and especially America’s obsession with the stars, Young remains a dedicated lover of America.

In 2010 Young endured a serious illness and was hospitalized for days as friends and family worried about his chances for recovery.

Russell Young Image Courtesy of The Goss-Michael Foundation

Post-illness, Young’s work, as will be obvious in the exhibition, took on a new form with political paintings such as “Helter Skelter” and Young’s use of the famous image of the Hell’s Angels at Altamont in 1969. Young calls the event the “start and the fall of modern America.”

Young’s aesthetic notion of re-printing the photo over and over again onto the canvas, then walking or crawling over the canvas with paint in an attempt to distort the photo almost to un-recognition seems to mirror the events at Altamont which represented a period in American history we are forced, rather than choose to own.

The exhibition includes one other notable series of paintings, the most recent set Young completed, entitled “Only Anarchists are Pretty.”

To hear Young describe the rationale behind the large-scale canvases featuring photographs of women in various positions of bondage, is to hear the emotional remembering of a childhood spent in the London council flats, the equivalent of the projects. Enduring beatings at the hands of schoolmates and living in what he equates to a feeling of entrapment even in his own home, led Young to create these images and name them for the projects themselves.

Despite a few moments of weakness, the Young show is valuable and will be especially appealing to anyone with even a passing interest in celebrity culture. His “anti-celebrity” paintings take their influence from the pop art of the 1960’s and have certainly become more “beautiful and iconic” than he may have initially intended.

Russell Young at the Goss-Michael Foundation is on display now through April 1, 2012.
The Dallas Arts District gets a lot of love in the press for bringing a diverse art scene to our city, but what most Dallasites do not know is that the city’s hippest art enclave truly resides in the Dallas Design District. About every six weeks, the art galleries of Lower Oak Lawn keep their doors open late on a Saturday evening, welcoming guests to mix, mingle, sip wine, meet artists and browse their latest exhibits.

Socialites and hipsters, art enthusiasts and collectors gather on Dragon Street, abandoning their cars for an evening stroll.
“Things really get hopping on Dragon Street!” explains JD Miller, contemporary artist and co-owner of Samuel Lynne Galleries. “On opening nights, there is an excitement and an energy that is remarkable. The street is full of people walking up and down going from gallery to see all the new exhibits. It reminds me of the experience of walking the length of Canyon Road in Santa Fe.”

With more than 15 galleries to explore, newbies to the Design District art scene might find their first trip overwhelming—so with the help of several LOL art experts, I put together a helpful list of tips and tricks to help you navigate your first gallery night like a pro.

Get Gussied Up

This being Dallas, the first question that always comes up is the ever-important, “What do I wear?” Given the diversity of people in attendance, the attire really runs the gamut. A sort of “smart casual” attire seems to rule the roost, with men sporting dressy jeans and blazers and women donning casual dresses or jeans with nice tops.

Mary Tomas, artist and owner of Mary Tomas Studio Gallery offers some outfit advice: “our guests come from diverse backgrounds and locations and dress up or down according to taste or mood. The atmosphere is fun, casual and lively and all are welcome.”

No matter what garb you opt to own for the evening, it is important to remember to sport comfortable shoes. Many of the galleries are spread out and, though parking is ample, you are sure to spend quite a bit of time on your feet.

Do Your Homework & Make a Plan

For first timers, it’s advised that, before driving down and diving in, you do some research. A comprehensive list of exhibit openings will be posted here on LowerOakLawn.com the week before each event. Also, in the next few weeks the Dragon Street Association will be launching an entirely new DragonStreetDallas.com website, which will host information on what has been recently re-branded as “Dragon.Open.” Patrons will be able to check out the exhibit schedule, as well as find information on the dealers and designers in the district that might be open late on Dragon.Open nights.

“Our goal is to get the word out that everyone is welcome on Dragon Street,” Miller says.

With so many galleries and shops to choose from, it’s almost impossible to hit them all in one evening. Give the list a once over and note any can’t-miss stop. Try to hit these first so you don’t run out of time. Check out LowerOakLawn.com’s Dallas Art Galleries in the Design District page for a map and quick links to information on area galleries.

Get Started Early & Ditch Your Ride

Each gallery maintains their own timing for gallery opening evenings—start times vary from 5 to 6 and last until 8 or 9. To get as many stops in as possible, start early.

Though most of your stops will be concentrated on Dragon Street, there are some great galleries off the beaten path. I like to start at Conduit Gallery on Hi Line before making my way over to Dragon Street, where I can park my car and stay awhile.

I recommend parking at one end of the street and making that your starting point. There are a few main “clusters” of galleries on the street. Some choose to drive between them, but it it’s nice weather and you remember to wear comfy shoes, leaving your car put shouldn’t be a problem.

Buying Smarts

Whether your plan is to just browse, or you’re on an art-buying mission, it’s good to have a good grasp on the buying basics. Some galleries post information or pricing for each work on a placard, but it’s also common to have a book that provides more details on the artist or piece. There are usually a couple floating around, so if you spot one, pick it up to browse or ask the person who is flipping through to see it when they’re finished.

If you don’t see a book and the information isn’t prominently posted, find a gallery staffer to inquire about any pieces that interest you.

“Every gallery owner is enthusiastic to explain to the viewer about the art they show, to provide information about the artists they represent, or talk about why art is important to collect,” Tomas says.

Meeting Artists

Meeting artists is another fun perk to attending gallery nights. Many artists attend to attend their own opening receptions, providing patrons the unique opportunity to get to know them.

“Connecting with an artist on a one-on-one basis is an important part of buying one of their pieces or deciding to collect their work,” Robert Wilborn, gallery manager at Galerie Zuger, says. “Many times, art isn’t just about the art, it’s about the relationships. Artists are excited to have their work be a part of their patrons lives and meeting the artist is an important part of the art buying experience.”

Information about which exhibits will have artists in attendance can be found here on the blog or on each gallery’s website. Gallery staffers will be happy to make an introduction for you, so don’t be shy about asking.

Take your Time, but Take Notes

If you come across a gallery, artist or piece that you love, there is no pressure to buy right away. Grab a business card, or make a note in your phone. Call the next day to get more information, or schedule a time to come view the art again.

Also, most galleries have a clipboard up front so you can add yourself to their mailing lists. Leave your information so you can get inside info on upcoming events for gallery patrons.

Throw your Plan out the Window

I know I told you to make a plan, but also be prepared to throw that plan out the window. There have been several times I planned on sweeping quickly through a gallery and instead stayed there all evening, ogling the exhibit and chatting up the artist.

A lot of the fun and excitement in gallery hopping comes from discovering a new artist or meeting a new person. Go with the flow and you’ll have more fun than if you stick to a rigid schedule. Remember, most of the exhibits will be up for a whole month, so there will be plenty of time for a return trip to the district to hit any places you miss.

Don’t Forget to Bring a Friend

Gallery hopping is a fun group outing or date activity. Though everyone might view the art at their own pace, it’s fun to go with friends and compare notes. And the best part of the deal — it’s free! Well, until you fall in love with a piece of art that you just have to have, that is.

Centrally and conveniently located close to Downtown, the Arts District, West Village, Oak Cliff and the Dallas North Tollway, restaurants and bar destinations are not far away. “Make a night of it,” Tomas says. “You’ll be glad you did!”

Dragon Street is my happy place. Located in the hearts of the Dallas Design District and known for its amalgamation of art galleries, Dragon Street is truly the intersection of art and design. An unassuming avenue of brightly colored facades, Dragon Street showrooms and art galleries house some of the most magical home furnishings and artwork in the city.

Each year, the vendors of Dragon Street join together to produce an affair of the arts to showcase their unique wares to the citizens of Dallas. This Saturday, October 1st, it’s that time again — when Dragon Street will close down to traffic, allowing pedestrians to stroll from shop to shop, enjoying food and drinks while being serenaded by the songs of a live band. Pedicabs will be on hand to transport the events cultured guests up and down the street as shoppers come and go from 5pm to 9pm.

Dragon Street virgins have a wealth of resources at their disposal to make the their first trip a success. Start by downloading this handy map which details the lay of the land. Take note of the cross streets that intersect Dragon. Find parking for Saturday night on Slocum Street then use one of these to cut through and find all the action.

Next, explore the archives of LowerOakLawn.com to whet your appetite for what’s to come. We’ve got some great stuff online but it doesn’t beat experiencing it in person! Finally, scope out a few choice shops in our Directory and make a list of “can’t miss” markers.

As for Dragon Street veterans, well, you know what to do! Looking forward to seeing a great crowd and if you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to drop me a line!

They say, a bad day in Paris is still better than a good day anywhere else. If you’re in agreement, you won’t want to miss French Fest 2011 at Banks Fine Art. Hosted on October 22 from 12 – 6:00 pm, this free, full-day event promises to be a true European escape, featuring French food, guest lectures, and, of course, French art!

Guest Lecturer Dr. Elizabeth New-Seitz, a self-confessed Francofile and founder of French Affaires, a company celebrating French travel, culture, language, and l’art de vivre, will give a presentation entitled Living Art: A Tour of French Decorative Art Museums in Paris. Also, owner Bob Banks will present highlights from his publication How to Buy Art Wisely.

Tasty treats will be provided by La Madeleine, Scardello Artisan Cheese and more.

The highlight of the event will be new works on display from French artist Vincent. Born June 19th, 1938, Vincent is a third generation artist who comes from a family of longstanding artistic fame. Vincent’s main inspiration comes from landscapes. He paints with oil on canvas and travels widely in search of sunlit Mediterranean villages and hidden inlets shimmering with turquoise water. Based on his lovely paintings, it’s clear he’s found a few!

Last but not least, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, ten percent of proceeds the day of the vent will go to The Dallas Affiliate of Susan G. Komen. French art supporting a local cause? I’m in!

The art galleries of the Dallas Design District may have taken a few months off for summer, but they’re back in full force this month, offering an impressive and creative array of exhibits for your viewing (and buying) pleasure. This Saturday evening, September 10, galleries in the district will open their doors and host artist receptions and exhibit openings featuring a collection of some of my favorite art I’ve seen yet.

The diverse array of talent on display this month makes it hard for me to play favorites, but here are my picks for your Saturday night stroll:

(1) I couldn’t have been more excited when I learned that Chris Judy would be displaying his colorful, contemporary paintings at The Cameron Gallery. After ogling his work online for months I’m excited to see it all hanging in one place! (2) Most of you know I’m a sucker for photography so Conduit Gallery’s 40 Portraits in 40 Years exhibit by Guy Mendes has me giddy with excitement. Featuring four decades of portraits focused on people in the south, this is one I’ll want to allot some serious time for. (3) One of my favorite sculptors, Michael Kalish, returns to Samuel Lynne Galleries with his newest exhibit, Legends & Lone Stars. Created from vintage license plates, tailgates and reclaimed auto parts, his sculptures depict iconic personalities, as well as classic Americana with tributes to symbolic Texas traditions. Now how’s that for Texas pride?! (4) Meet photographer Dan Burkholder at sun to moon gallery, who will host an artist reception featuring the artist himself as well as several new photographic prints, which combine handmade platinum prints with digitally applied archival color pigments.

And that’s not all…the rest of the exhibits are great, so get here early so you can explore them all! The weather promises to be perfect so there are no excuses not to!

Group shows are the stars of this month’s art exhibit openings in the Dallas Design District. The sheer number of artists on display this month in LOL is mind-boggling! My picks for Saturday night’s art stroll are:

(1) Conduit Gallery’s Wunderkammer group exhibition has definitely peaked my curiosity! Curated by Phillip M. Jones, the show pairs eleven artists from the Lexington, Kentucky art community with seven Dallas artists to create a modern-day Wunderkammer or “Cabinet of Curiosities.” (2) After browsing through Galleri Urbane’s slideshow of work from their First Annual Juried Exhibition, I can’t help but be impressed by the talent that will be on display. From paintings and installations to projected images, this diverse show is a can’t miss. (3) Support emerging abstract artist Joey Brock, a Dallas resident and Texas native, at Craighead Green Gallery. (4) “Dialogue,” a collaborative canvas creation by artists Bill Nimelman and Mary Tomas is sure to get you talking!

Come down to visit this Saturday evening to take in all the new work!
