Good morning loyal LOL readers! Just a quick notice — updates on the blog will be suspended for the next two weeks as our lovely programmers work to upgrade our database, jazz up our design, and implement a few other surprises that I’m not quite ready to spill the beans on yet!

Don’t worry, you’ll still be getting newsy blog posts in your inbox, but I wanted y’all to know that they have been scheduled in advance. If you have any new businesses, events or hot topics to blog about, they will have to wait until after the website wizards give me permission to post again.

In the mean time, feel free to keep sending in tips! I’ll be holding up the fort on Twitter and Facebook, where you can still get up to the minute updates.

I seriously can’t wait to show off what we’ve been working on. I promise, it’s worth the wait! For the nosy folks in the crowd, here’s a sneak preview of what’s to come…

They’re pewter pros, gurus of gunmetal—the rock stars of rose gold. Yes, f. is for frank jewelers are the metal mavens of the Dallas Design District. Their carefully handcrafted baubles have stolen the hearts of men and women, housewives and hipsters in Dallas and across the nation.

In preparation of the release of their 2012 collection, f. is for frank is hosting a sale, making room for the new by discounting pieces from last year’s line.

With prices up to 40 percent off, a discount bigger than we’ve ever seen from them, you’re sure to score a pretty sweet deal. The selection is great, with several styles being offered in several metals. But quantities are limited, and once they’re gone, that’s it.

Browse the sale page, or better yet, swing by the store to get a closer look.

I have to admit, it’s one of my favs. This art-focused digest dishes up a daily dose of culture, reviewing the best of theater, museums, opera, film, dance, music and visual arts in Dallas.

While I don’t always agree with their critiques, I love how the authors keep me in the know about what’s new in the Dallas arts scene. I stay pretty on top of the visual arts happenings through my work in the Design District, but it’s fun to read about what’s going on in the performing arts.

An established FrontRow fan, I was pretty excited last November when they decided to take a leap from the virtual to the actual, hosting FrontRowLive, a culture-packed, art-filled party at the Dallas Contemporary. Hundreds of culture crazed enthusiasts turned out, and the event was such a success that they’re offering up seconds!

FrontRow Live will be hosted, once again, at the Dallas Contemporary in the Dallas Design District on May 31. Headlining performers are Portland electro-pop act STRFKR, French musician Onra and Austin-based DJ Ben Aqua.

The reasonably-priced $15 ticket includes music, food, free beverages, art and all sorts of other surprises. If last year’s event is any indication, the surprises might come as a shock to even the organizers!

Registration is now open at dmagazinefrontrowlive.eventbrite.com. I’ve been told tickets are selling quickly, so I recommend you scoop yours up ASAP.

Read more about this year’s event and get the latest on performers and artists as they’re announced at www.frontrow.dmagazine.com.

The Dallas Design District has been well covered in the local press with fabulous features in D Magazine, the Dallas Morning News, Dallas Business Journal, FD Luxe and more. But Sunday our beloved neighborhood hit the national scene, named by New York Times writer Stirling Kelso as Dallas’ new “it” district.

The article highlights a handful of the Design Districts’ most acclaimed new restaurants, including the neighborhood favorite, Meddlesome Moth, Nick Badovinus’s new Off-Site Kitchen, and the illustrious Oak, which recently received a four star review from the Dallas Morning News. It also calls out art and furniture hot spots, such as Goss-Michael Foundation, Dallas Contemporary, Highgate House, Griffin Trading and Circuit 12 Contemporary.

The businesses mentioned in the article are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what the Design District has to offer designers, diners, and tourists alike. I commit to making this blog the vehicle by which the other awesome businesses, art galleries, showrooms and restaurants in the area can tell their story and further establish the Design District’s status as Dallas’ “it” district!

Derrick Tribbey is a professional photographer and Dallas Design District resident. When I got an email showing off his latest engagement shoot, I just knew I had to spotlight it on the blog! Not only are his photos gorgeous, but they capture a really unique side of the Design District that was too neat to not show off.

The Design District has long been a favorite locale for engagement photo shoots, but it particularly fits Derrick’s personal shooting style. ”The Design District is one of my favorites places to shoot in Dallas. The brightly colored walls and large amounts of light that reflect from the walls and buildings allow me to capture exactly my style of photography,” says Derrick.

Choosing to shoot this particular couple here was an easy decision. “Erikah told me what she and Jordan envisioned for their photos, and I knew the Design District would be the perfect place.”

As with all engagement shoots that come across my desk, my nosy side came out, and I just knew I had to talk to the lovely couple. Erykah, the bride to be, was kind enough to sit down and chat with me about her and Jordan’s romantic engagement story, shooting in the Design District, working with Derrick and much more…

Kendall: First of all, congratulations on your engagement! I must know, how did y’all meet?

Erykah: We met when we were working together at a bar while in college. We worked together every Monday and Wednesday together for two years and developed an amazing friendship that turned into a beautiful relationship. We’ve been head over heels for each other ever since.

Kendall: And how did he propose?

Erykah: We had moved to Orlando, Florida about 8 months after we started dating for Jordan to finish school. We lived close to Disney World and Universal, so we went all the time. We decided to go to Universal one day and ride roller coasters until the park closed.

Halfway through the day, he asked me if I wanted to get a caricature done. At first, I said no and that it was cheesy and over priced so we went about our day. Jordan kept pushing to get this caricature done, so finally I agreed. We sat down and the guy started sketching away, and I noticed that we had gotten a pretty good crowd around us watching. I figured he just made us look really funny and didn’t think anything of it.

When he finished drawing, he handed the picture to me and I looked at it and noticed the picture had been drawn with Jordan down on his knee holding a box with a ring in it. I turned around to show Jordan and he was down on his knee, holding a box with the most beautiful ring I had ever seen in it. I started shaking an crying and saying yes, yes, yes, and the crowd that had gathered started clapping and cheering. It was amazing!

Kendall: Why did you choose the Design District to take your engagement photos?

Erykah: We love being outside, so we knew we wanted our pictures to be taken outdoors and I had told our photographer, Derrick Tribbey, that we wanted to do so. We met up with him and he took us down to the Design District and captured exactly what we envisioned. We knew we wanted bright colors and lots of sunshine and as soon as I told him that he knew right where to take us.

Kendall: How did you like shooting in the Design District? With Derrick?

Erykah: We loved shooting in the Design District!!! We picked a Sunday because we knew it wouldn’t be as crowded. There is so much beautiful architecture and so many bold colored walls along the street that is gaves us a ton of options.

Derrick was a wonderful photographer. We really enjoyed working with him. He was very professional and really listened to what we wanted. The pictures came out perfect! We have recommended him to many of our friends and I know that a few have already used him and were equally as pleased!

Kendall: What is your favorite photo?

Erykah: I really love the one of us sitting down on the curb and we are looking at each other and smiling. I can tell by looking that is one of the unposed ones. I also like the one where we are sitting down and my head is on Jordan’s shoulder and he’s looking down at my ring.

Kendall: How do your photos reflect your relationship and personality as a couple?

Erykah: I think our photos reflect our relationship perfectly. We love to be outside and we loved all the shots Derrick got of us when we weren’t posing and didn’t know he was taking a picture. When I look back through them, I see a lot of those unposed pictures and they ended up being some of my favorites because it’s just us being us.

♥

You can see more photos from Erykah and Jordan’s engagement shoot in our Love in LOL photo gallery.
I don’t know about you, but I have serious trouble committing to a full month of one workout class. Yoga, running groups, spinning, zumba — I’ve tried them all. It’s not that I’m lazy, it’s just that doing the same exercises day in and day out is too repetitive for my style. I’m a multi-tasker in life and require constant stimulation and change in my workout routine as well. I’ll quit, not because of lack of motivation, but because I’m bored.

Lander Peerman, Owner of Fusion Fitness

Founded by Austin native, Lander Peerman, a self-confessed chocolate lover, lululemon fanatic and listmaking fiend, (we should totally be friends!) Fusion Fitness offers private training, duet training, small group training, and group fitness classes. The fitness center is the first dedicated workout facility in the Dallas Design District.
